From CNet: StopBadware goes nonprofit with funding from Google, others
Thursday January 28 2010 - 13:23:21
StopBadware, the anti-malware effort run out of Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, is spinning off to become a separate nonprofit with funding from Google, PayPal, and Mozilla, the organization was set to announce on Monday.
StopBadware was launched four years ago to help companies keep spyware, viruses, adware, and other malware off their sites. The project collects and analyzes data from Web sites and advocates for safer practices.
The group's "badware alerts," expose applications that violate its badware guidelines and have AOL, Real Networks, Sears, and others to change their practices regarding customer choice. StopBadware also collaborates with Google in warning users about Web sites that can install malware on visitors' computers.

Blue Highway
Sunday January 10 2010 - 14:22:09
Blue Highway begins as a film about a kayak trip tracing the historic Lynn Canal travels of John Muir, but becomes a study of both sides of the battle over the proposed Juneau access road. After more than three decades of debate, is there anything left to say, and can two sides separated by environmental, economic and cultural concerns ever come together?

Is the Printed Page Dead (or Just a Little Sick)
Friday January 01 2010 - 18:00:02
As most of you know, I am an avid reader. Give me a good who done it or a terrifying thriller and I am basking in glory.

Last year, I invested in an e-reader. Not just because it was a cool gadget (which it most definitely is), but because it made my reading experience better. I could pack as many books onto my reader as I wanted when I went on holiday - without having to take a suitcase just for my reading material. I could adjust the print size (the eyes aren't what they used to be). And I could browse the book sections without ever having to go through the hassle of finding a parking space downtown.

I chose the Bookeen CyBook Gen 3 reader because of it's ink technology, no glare screen, and it's ability to read any e-book from any of the e-book providers. I love that it has a leather cover and is the same size as a small hardcover edition.

But it made me wonder how e-readers will affect the printed page.

So, naturally, i googled my concern. Seems like I am not the only one asking the question.

The Christmas Elf
Tuesday December 22 2009 - 19:58:07
This is a reprint from a post I did a few Christmas' ago. I thought I would share it for anyone who may have missed it.
When I was six years old, I still believed in Santa Clause. To insure that I continued to believe, my mother went to great lengths. That year, in our humble little second floor apartment, she somehow managed to put footprints in the snow on the roof outside the bedroom window I shared with my younger sister. There were even little hoof prints and what looked like sleigh tracks. My sister and I ran into the living room to tell her what we had seen, totally oblivious to the cast on her leg and the neighbors sitting there with her. To this day, I appreciate what she did. It was one of those magical moments that still lingers with me at this time of year.

We weren’t big on ‘traditions’ at Christmas. We would go to a mid-night service on Christmas Eve, we opened our presents on Christmas morning, (Unlike the barbaric practice that some participate in, where one to all gifts are opened on Christmas Eve. Pagans!) and on New Years, my mother would burn a Bayberry candle all day for good luck and prosperity in the coming year.

I don’t know exactly when I stopped ‘believing’ in Santa. I like to think it was around eight or nine. I don’t know. I have a ten year old step-son, now. He insists he believes in Santa. My wife struggles to keep it going. For the three years we have been married, it’s been a priority. One of the ways this is accomplished is by marking all but one or two gifts ‘From : Santa’. He spends half the day with her, then goes to his step-dad’s and finds even more gifts ‘From : Santa’. His parents discuss what they are getting him so they don’t screw up and get the same thing, because, as you well know, this would shatter the charade and the boy would know.
